MABA 2024-25 Program Descriptions

Welcome back, MABA families!  We are very excited to start our 2024-25 season!  We will be offering a variety of programs across a range of ages and experience levels.  See below for descriptions of these programs.

Travel Program
MABA’s travel basketball program is Medway’s more competitive basketball offering and offers players the chance to grow their skills and compete with their teammates against other towns. Registration for the Intramural and Challenger programs will be open in the coming weeks.

Medway’s travel program for grades 4-8 consists of the following:

  • Two 75-minute practices per week beginning in November
  • One pre-season tournament / jamboree (usually in mid-late November)
  • One game per week (on Sundays) beginning in December
  • 12 regular season games against other towns participating in the Metrowest League
  • Single elimination playoffs
  • For grades 5-8, tryouts/evaluations will be held to determine a player’s roster placement. Players will be assigned to a roster that is aligned with their skill-level (i.e., A-team, B-team, etc) (see “additional details section for more information)
  • For grade 4, players will be evaluated, but the rosters will be balanced to ensure an equal spread of talent

The 3rd grade travel program consists of:

  • Slightly shorter season (~10 games)
  • Games are 4 vs 4 instead of 5 v 5 and on 8 foot hoops
  • One practice per week (typically on Friday evenings)
  • Note: Due to gym-time constraints, we have a maximum number of roster spots (24) for third grade. We will accept players in the order in which they are registered, so we encourage you to register in a timely fashion.
  • With this being the first year of travel basketball for this group, players will be evaluated during the first few weeks of practice and then will be divided into evenly balanced teams.

Intramural Program

Elementary (Boys Grade 1-2, Girls Grade 1-3):  Players will have weekly 75-minute sessions where they will develop beginner level basketball skills and knowledge.  Coaches will mix in weekly skills development as well as a variety of games to introduce players to the game.  No matter the skill level, coaches will differentiate the goals of the lessons to ensure that all players are learning and having fun.  Your registration will include the gym time, instruction, year end celebration,  and t-shirt.  Please note that additional time slots may open up based on larger enrollment.

Secondary (Boys 3-8, Girls 4-8):  Players will have weekly 75 minute sessions where they will continue to grow their knowledge of basketball through a series of drills and 5 on 5 games.  Players will have weekly drill sessions focusing on beginner-intermediate level skills.  More advanced skills will be introduced as the players grow in age/ability. Each week will end with a 5 on 5 games coached by parents/high school players and refereed by parent volunteers.  The Secondary program will culminate with a jamboree where all teams will have a chance to fight for the championship.  Your registration will include the gym time, instruction, and t-shirt.

Kindergarten Program

Registration will be open to kindergarten students in the Medway community.  The season will consist of 4 clinic style opportunities of 75 minutes on selected Saturdays.  The players will be introduced to the basics of the game(passing, shooting, dribbling, etc.).  Players will use 26.5 balls and will play on 8 foot hoops.  The goal of the kindergarten program is for players to have fun and to preview many of the concepts that they will learn over the next few years.  Your registration will include the gym time, instruction, year end celebration, and t-shirt.

Challenger Program

MABA is glad to partner with the Challenger Program in order to give athletes with disabilities the opportunity to develop basketball skills, compete in games, and build lifelong relationships both on and off the court.  The season will consist of 4 clinic style opportunities of 75 minutes on scheduled Saturdays. Players will work with coaches and high school players through a series of drills and games to grow their knowledge of the game on an individualized level. This program is open to players with disabilities from Medway and the surrounding communities of various age levels.  There is no cost related to this program.  Your registration will include the gym time, instruction, year end celebration, and t-shirt.

Open Gym Time

Open gym will be available over the vacation breaks during the regular time shots.  This time is not mandatory, but open to people who are around and looking to play.  Coaches will structure the time based on how many players attend each session, but may include skills, fun games, free shoot, 3 on 3, 5 on 5, etc.
